Games (Liked and Anticipated)
PREV 5 | 1 - 5 / 33 | NEXT 5 | VIEW ALL
Beatmania IIDX

"I love this series. Few rhythm games are hard and intense enough to scratch the itch now, but Beatmania has always been serious and now there are over 30 of them!"

DJ Max Portable

"My two favorite PSP games. I love IIDX, but have to admit this is more polished, feature rich, better sound production, better tunes, high quality vids on every single song. PSP fits it 100% too"

Albatross 18

"Do you wish you had to do Street Fighter-ish moves just to get by in what amounts to Hot Shots Golf online? I don't... but the designs are cute. :/"

Bioshock (PC)

"I played a bit - beat the first boss I guess - I filled his unarmored head with enough ammo to crack a safe! That really blew all that carefully crafted realism out the window and I lost interest."

Braid (X360)

"Looks so original! I can't wait for the PC version!"

Command and Conquer (PC)

"As close as I've ever come to having fun in an RTS. Also proved to me that RTSes are not for me..."

Counterstrike (PC)

"I rarely do FPS, much less online. This sucked me in despite its many flaws. Having crafty opponents, where the norm is to know every inch of every level really changed the dynamic. But cheaters suck"

Characters:

fuchikoma, — I typically used this name.

Kamikaze Pistolero, — If you play for too long, you get too good, no matter who you are. Near the end of my time in CS, I'd buy the SiG pistol and only use primary weaps I took from victims. Of course I left a cocky spray behind when I got them too... CS really brought out the competitive prick in me come to think of it... but I guess it's that kind of game.

MAC Daddy, — I like to hide in tight spaces with a MAC10/TMP and remove heads... people think the gun is so useless you can't kill with it so they get really upset. Even better if it's a 1-shot snipe from across the level! (first shot always hits!)

Descent (MAC)

"Just awesome... why can't more shooters be like this? Zero-grav in a mine, what twisted mind thought that up? You get so lost... then it just clicks and no orientation is needed. Great enemies too. "

Diablo (PC)

"This game's resources are etched into my brain for all time. It was great playing online with people from all over back then. But cheating killed it. Even counter-counter-counter hacks weren't enough."

Eve Online (PC)

"I played for a while and loved the realism of scale in the game. After a while I just couldn't look past how everything is trained by waiting longer arbitrary times while you pay to wait, so I quit."

Characters:

fuchikoma, Minmatar Trader — Nice avatar maker! Bad... other stuff.

FEAR (PC)

"It looked like such a promising survival horror title. Then in one minute I was crouching behind crates in a warehouse shooting generic marines! Can't believe I wasted my time trying it..."

Gears of War (X360)

"To be fair I'm the wrong audience for this. The graphics were typical Epic beauty. The game was so boring I felt like I was going through a parody of cliche shooters. I hear it improves, but I'm gone"

Grand Theft Auto III (PS2)

""Wow... a whole city in a box!" Freedom like this was unheard of. So many nights spent passing the controller around doing crazy stuff with friends. "

Grand Theft Auto IV (X360)

"This can't be GTA! Targeting and shooting works on a controller! Cartoon madness doesn't kill you at random! Cops don't beam down infinitely from nowhere! Euphoria engine makes people so real! Great!!"

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2)

"Regardless of the vast freedom in this game, if they couldn't be bothered to fix age-old bugs, I didn't want to play. Everything is just broken for me in this game. "

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2)

"Best missions next to GTA4 IMO. More exciting though. Still buggy like 3, with some new ones, and on PC, VISIBLE clipping brushes jutting! Cops shoot through walls... stairs kill you... messy but ok"

Guitar Hero II (PS2)

"I love music games. Too bad more aren't on here. IIDX, DJ Max, Gitaroo Man, リズム天国, 応援団/EBA. Guitar Hero may be a spinoff of Guitar Freaks, but it's extremely fun and addictive regardless. ROCK ON!"

Guitar Hero III (X360)

"So many people hate on this game. I like the difficulty bump and new timing as a beatmania fan. Shredding through long mind-stunning mazes of notes is hypnotic bliss! Any new music game is welcome..."

Half-Life 2 (PC)

"You'd think you were outdoors if there was more than one path through it. Or that there were physics if they worked anywhere but the stages. Or that the AI's good, if they didn't go blank and jam..."

Legend of the Red Dragon

"LoRD? The BBS door game? No way! I don't remember much other than I think I played the RIPTerm version and it looked neat... didn't go far though."

Lineage II (PC)

"Very good looking game. Where I played there was NO ONE around. Huge cities with a dozen people in them - on official servers. In the dungeons, goldfarmers killed anyone trying to quest and no GMs"

Characters:

Monkeh, Dwarf Treasure Hunter — Class? Honestly I forget most details of it, I didn't finish my free month...

Mass Effect (X360)

"I'd like to try this... but I'm not in the mood for SecuROM. :/ Looks good though."

Metal Gear Solid (PS)

"I played Twin Snakes which is fairly different... well... a total remake. I just wasn't compatible with the PSX controls and camera, it's brutal. "Porting it to MGS2" opened my eyes to the fun of MGS"

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (PS2)

"I really ought to catch up. I rarely play this, but it's been excellent so far."

Phantasy Star Online (DC)

"I played Blue Burst in beta for a while. Wow, I clearly missed out on a lot! I loved Diablo and this game OOZES Sega! Got bored doing the same few dungeons for every mission though, and knew no one"

Portal (PC)

"Incredible. I bought Orange Box so I could have this on disc and don't regret it. Even with the limited props the mechanic feels so playful. I'd amuse myself with curiosity. Great writing + aesthetic"

Quake (MAC)

"What a classic. Such crude graphics, but the areas feel so concrete and atmospheric! Crazy enemies and visceral weapons... and once I learned about mods and console commands, I was hooked hardcore!"

Ragnarok Online (PC)

"Like an old favorite, Diablo, but every area is fresh and original, bursting with personality. It's also horribly managed and got overrun with bots a lot. Still, I met some of my best friends there"

Server: Chaos

Guild: PSYENCE

Characters:

DojoMojoMofo, — Battle aco destined for monk. What a self-sufficient class for soloing! Yow! My sin even has a heal clip, but... this is different! Maybe better to get hit more and just heal like it's nothing!

Jidou Hanbaiki, — Or a very similar name... This guy's a "vending machine!" *ba-dum* *tsssh!*

Kuromaru, — Agi swordie. Fun slasher, but I like to loaf around a bit more on breaks AND the combat is pretty boring.

Ninja_Akamaru, — No matter what class I try, assassin fits like a glove. Hybrid dagger/katar so be it massive crits, or multi-thousand damage slashes it just feels GOOD... then more than one monster comes, my flee breaks and I'm hooped, lol

Novice: 1 ea, — Sakray super-novice (not the class! That's cheating! >:o) Around lv.30, I forget the build. (STR/VIT?) Has a strange penchant for pretending to be an item...

[S-Mart], — "Shop Smart... Shop S-Mart!" I'll give you one guess what class this guy is...

Rock Band (X360)

"Looks ok. I don't see anything it has over Guitar Hero, but I'd play it. I wouldn't buy the whole instrument set though! Wow that's... big."

Skate (PS3)

"Grind Turismo, lol... But really... no skating game feels more realistic by far."

Star Wars: Battlefront II (PC)

"Fantastic. I don't even like FPS anymore but this brings the huge epic battles of Star Wars to any system you feel like using, and it does it with style and distinction! Such an epic experience! YES!"

Super Mario Galaxy (WII)

"I don't get it - I love exploring, & everywhere in this game was different, but I got bored so fast. I guess I'm really a 2D Mario guy? I don't know. I'll go back someday, I just don't feel like it..."

World of Warcraft (PC-MAC)

""If Lineage 2 traded its graphics for good admins" But in the end, the walk times and eye-gouging graphics drove me away. Skills/professions were cool. Not a Korean MMO - I actually had cash! lol"

Server: Lightbringer

Characters:

Akart, Level 21 Undead Rogue — Normally I like thief-based classes. Here it's just depressingly weak though.

Bosmonachus, Level 22 Tauren Druid — Druids are fun...

Q. If you made your own game, what would it be like? (Answer!)
A. I wouldn't make anything I promoted seriously unless it was significantly different from what's already out there. The only exception would be if I did a rhythm or arcade style game just for fun...

Q. Are you interested in working within the game industry? (Answer!)
A. I know the technical side from programming to project management in theory. Lacking art skills. But I hear the job is just savage most times. I'm happy working the front lines in IT, but game development is just too hardcore. I think I'd burn out! I'd love to do some testing and feedback if it would be taken seriously though... just not super long term.

Q. What do you love or hate about PVP? (Answer!)
A. I feel like a burned out veteran of a thousand wars I never fought in... I'm just sick of killing people and being killed now. The thrill is gone. I need something more cerebral or my interest just wastes away. A really good game can still pull me in though. I rarely PvP strangers in MMOs, but I'd do a few rounds of CounterStrike or BattleFront 2... UT is a classic too. Otherwise, I need something different like WarHeads, DJ Max online, Guitar Hero... not running around shooting everything that moves. I've had my fill... 2D (or even 3D) fighters though... I'm all over those if anyone asks. High speed 1-on-1 strategy. I guess then I really feel the personal physical and mental competition in action. It's exciting to engage another human on multiple levels at once like that.

Q. Do you use voice chat? (Answer!)
A. Yes, but only when absolutely needed

Q. How do you feel about playing characters of the opposite sex? (Answer!)
A. (I'm a guy) A bit preferential... I don't do it in MMOs, but do in dungeon crawlers and fighters a lot. In fighters they're a more fun style once I get the basic experience needed to be fast and technical. In crawlers... they're more fun to look at? :p Actually I played a rogue in Diablo 1 for the play style. In Tenchu... better stealth, far better looking, more fun dialog! :p

Q. In real life, are you male or female? (Answer!)
A. Male

Q. What sort of players annoy you the most? (Answer!)
A. Griefers, online cheaters. In Diablo I used to load a custom template of memory hacks so that I could play fair against the monsters, but stand up to cheating PKs. Sadly they all godmoded to players too, so we only scuffed each other's armor... In online FPSes I LOVE taking down cheaters without using cheats. I hate playing against them though and their prevalence is why I don't play more... I like CS, haha... nothing like starting the round and having half your team shot dead in 5 seconds through a mountain or solid wall...

Q. Do you feel relationships within games are meaningful? (Answer!)
A. If not for games I probably wouldn't have a "relationship," so yes, profoundly. But it all depends how you decide to take it - some people just want opponents. But I have met some awesome people in online games over the years.

Q. How do you feel about selling virtual items for real money? (Do NOT advertise RMT services!) (Answer!)
A. Morally... semi-neutral. As a player, I hate it not so much because of twinks running around in purchased gear, but because gold farmers ruin the economy of so many games for real human players! Going deeper, I think the phenomenon illustrates how people percieve reality itself - these items have value because they are persistent, and can be observed by others as well. I wrote an essay about this a while ago but it's offline...

Q. What sort of tools (calculators, builders, spreadsheets, etc.) do you use to plan your characters? (Answer!)
A. In MMOs I've been known to use character calculators to show me non-base stats, skill point allocations, and even damage/defense against different monsters and projected exp/sec. I think in an MMO, FAQs and similar things are assumed to be common knowledge. I like to do non-typical builds, but sometimes I spend as much time reading and planning a game as I do playing it! (but at least it's fun...)

Q. What music do you like to play games to? (Answer!)
A. Game music. I'm also very dependent on in-game sounds. Even back in the days of Doom and Quake, a set of stereo headphones were as good as radar! How could I drown that out with music? It's like a big flashing arrow pointing to my opponents! But man, I love me some PSX-era Namco/Psygnosis/Square techno...

Q. What question would you add to the Attitudes system? (Answer!)
A. I'm only 11 in, I don't know if it's already in here! "What do you think of the casual/hardcore distinction, and how it at all would you classify yourself?" "What WOULDN'T you do for a Klondike bar?" "WHAT... is the in-flight velocity of an unladen European swallow?"

Q. Do your quiz results on GamerDNA reflect your personality, and if not, what did it get wrong? (Answer!)
A. Well... my FPS results don't show that I'm not into FPS, haha... And I'm not even doing the RTS quiz because it's so far from applying to me I can't even take a base of reference to answer from. Maybe a genre affinity quiz would be cool? It would have to be extensive though to cover them fairly...

Q. What is a feature you would like added to GamerDNA? (Answer!)
A. An ejector seat... or maybe we could put rims on it? YES... RIMS ON EVERYTHING... *slaps self* Sorry, I'm crazy. It's a cool site! I just wish it worked reliably in Opera - I can't even sign in to the front page because I can't edit my username in the login box!

Q. What are your most memorable achievements in a game? (Answer!)
A. Helping friends get to 2nd class in Ragnarok and doing the same myself.
Finally getting the hang of Pop'n Music/Beatmania.
Learning to drive in a sim racer.
Beating Wipeout XL completely.
Killing 2 players with a pistol, running out of ammo, tossing it on the ground, and knifing a third guy while picking the gun up and escaping the room in CS 1.5. Also gratuitous MAC-10 kills, sometimes sniping. :p
Learning enough from Tourist Trophy to take on a real sportbike... and actually having the in-game experience save me from accidents!

Q. When do you play, including timezone? (Answer!)
A. Whenever on handhelds, but usually 7pm-10pm MST

Q. What experience do you have beta-testing games? (Answer!)
A. Ragnarok Online 2nd open beta, through final release chapter 5 international, which was... still kinda beta. Thanks, Gravity, lol Other than that, just demo discs mostly. I don't like glitchy games, and have a natural knack for finding bugs by accident in retail versions.

Q. Ninjas or pirates? (Answer!)
A. Ninjas

Q. Have you ever had a memorable real-life meeting with other gamers? (Answer!)
A. <3<3<3

Q. What are the specs on your gaming rig? (Answer!)
A. In order of play, PSP DS Lite PS3 PS2 iPod Touch 16GB GBA SP Wii Dell XPS 710, Core 2 Duo E6300, 4GB RAM, 2x Sli nVidia GeForce 7900 GS 256MB. Samsung LNS3241D 32" 1080i-at-720p TV (as monitor) MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz, 2GB RAM, GeForce 8600M GT (loaner from work) Dell Inspiron 8600, Pentium M 1GHz, 1GB RAM, GeForce FX Go 5200 54MB Dreamcast GBC

Q. How many hours a week do you play? (Answer!)
A. 10-20
